Music & Family

In my blog, I will be interviewing my dad about the music he listened to when he was younger, in his teen years, and what he listens to now.

Childhood Questions:

Me: How important was music to you when you were younger?

Dad: It gave me an opportunity to listen to different classical songs since TV didn't give me good songs to listen to. Like when I was growing up all the songs told a story and they would spend years to make sure the song was perfect before showing it to the world.

Me: What was your favorite kind of music or artist growing up?

Dad: I listened to Country, Rap, and Hip Hop. My favorite artists were Jay-Z, Michael Jackson, Tupac, Garth Brooks, Bob Dillan, and Tim McGraw.

Me: Did you or anyone close to you play or make music during your childhood?

Dad: No, no one wrote or listened to music when I was younger.

Teen Year Questions:

Me: What was the most popular genre during this time?

Dad: Hip Hop and R&B

Me: Who were your favorite artists?

Dad: Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Boyz II Men were definitely some of my favorite artists and music writers in my teen years.

Me: Did you have to take any music classes?

Dad: Yes

Me: Do you associate any song with any life event?

Dad: Yes, "What A Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.

Me: Did you play an instrument or sing in a choir?

Dad: Yes, I sang in the choir and I played the drums during my off-season of football.

Me: Did you have music at church? What was it like?

Dad: Yes, I did we had a piano and drummer but they were not that skilled.

Me: What technology did you use to listen to music?

Dad: I used a CD player, iPod, boombox, and Walkman.

Present Day Questions:

Me: What is the most recent song you listened to?

Dad: I listen to, "For All the Dogs" by Drake.

Me: Does your music taste progress over time or is it mostly stuck in a certain era?

Dad: Yes, my music changed by the day I listen to music based on what I am feeling that day.

Me: What do you think about today’s music / the music we listen to?

Dad: I don't think today's music will be as classical as the music in the 90s and early 2000s. I don't think artists invest a ton of time creating good music with tools (like AI) you can use that to create music that isn't theirs.

Me: Do you keep up at all with modern music?

Dad: No, I don't

Me: What platform or device do you use to listen to music?

Dad: I use Spotify, Sirius XM, Pandora, and Apple Music.

Me: What music do you usually listen to on road trips?

Dad: I will typically listen to The 10s spot, pop, and ESPN radio.

Me: How many playlists do you have?

Dad: I've got 8-10 playlist

  2. I loved learning about your family's taste in music. As well as the description of the music choices you made. I felt like I got a good depiction of what playlists are played in your family through this blog. (Which was the main point of this blog.) You did a very good job on this blog!

  3. From reading both yours and your sisters blog, I can see that gospel music seems to be a big thing in y'alls live and a big connector in your family. It's great when music can bring a family together.
