Big Blog 2: The Tango of Argentina

Image
In this blog, I will be talking about the Tango of Argentina. I've known about Argentina because of their amazing pro soccer/football program. I've never researched Argentina but this will be my chance to learn more about the people who live there, their culture, and Argentine Tango. I will be talking about how it originated, the elements of the Tango, the dance of the tango, the different styles of tango, and Tango festivals and events. The Argentine Tango Argentine Tango originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay in the late 19th century. The African candombe, Cuban habanera as well as waltzes and polkas are the roots of this dance. It was a popular dance with European immigrants, former slaves, and the working and lower class. But during Argentina's political struggles the dance was forced underground and performing it was considered an illegal act. People started seeing it in the light more in the 1980s and it soared again before spreading throughou...

Music & Family

In my blog, I will be interviewing my dad about the music he listened to when he was younger, in his teen years, and what he listens to now. Childhood Questions: Me: How important was music to you when you were younger? Dad: It gave me an opportunity to listen to different classical songs since TV didn't give me good songs to listen to. Like when I was growing up all the songs told a story and they would spend years to make sure the song was perfect before showing it to the world. Me:  What was your favorite kind of music or artist growing up? Dad : I listened to Country, Rap, and Hip Hop. My favorite artists were Jay-Z, Michael Jackson, Tupac, Garth Brooks, Bob Dillan, and Tim McGraw. Me:  Did you or anyone close to you play or make music during your childhood? Dad:  No, no one wrote or listened to music when I was younger. Teen Year Questions: Me:  What was the most popular genre during this time? Dad:  Hip Hop and R&B Me:  Who were your favorite ar...

Big Blog 1: Soul Music

Image
I have heard about Soul music and how it came from African-American artists, but I wanted to learn more about it. In this blog will be writing about soul music and its characteristics, what Ray Charles has done for soul music and all his awards over the years, and the performance style of soul music. Soul music combines rhythm and blues, urban blues, Motown, smooth jazz, and gospel music. Ray Charles was the first person to perform soul music. He was known as The Genius and contributed to the founding of soul music. It became popular because of its distinctive style in the 1960s and became even more popular in the 1970s. During the 1960s Civil Rights movement Black college students started to reject the nonviolent and integrationist approach from the civil rights leaders. Their activism started a political movement and Black people started to assign social and cultural meanings which is described as "soul". This term started to become associated with Black Cultural production...

Music & Gender

When I listen to music I normally don't think about if men would listen to a song that I like. With music, it all depends on the scenery like if you are with someone or if you are by yourself just listening to music by yourself. Like when I am by myself I like to listen to upbeat music that's catchy and something I can vibe with. But, I have always wondered what kind of music people think that men and women would listen to. Some men and women have different tastes in music but you will always find a song that both men and women will both listen to.  Males usually listen to Rock, Hip Hop, or Rap which I am not surprised by. Even though I do know, that a few males listen to country music. When I am around males about 70 percent of the time they will listen to those types of music. Most males will listen to different artists like Eminem, Drake, Bruno Mars, and Jay-Z. The rapper Eminem's song Lose Yourself is definitely a go-to for males to play just because it is one of his m...

Music & Rituals

Recently, I have been very interested in Japanese culture and food. I haven't ever thought about their music but I do think it would be good to learn about their different wedding, funerals, and holidays and what kind of music they play during that time. Japan has a very set culture and knows what is right and what is wrong. Like I know not everyone likes a set culture I know some people like a loose culture so you can decide if you want to be like your ancestors or not.     In Japanese weddings, they do the same things that Americans do like, vows and ring exchanges but also get cups of sacred sake and exchange them between the bride, groom, and their families. They call the exchange of sake between the bride and groom ' San San Kudo'.  San means 3 and kudo means nine which means the groom and bride drink it 3 times from 3 different sized sake cups. At Japanese funerals, they will normally wear black clothing and a white cloth covering their face...
